In the MOOD for Climate Action

MOODs (Meaningful Open Opportunities for Discovery) are immersive, certified learning journeys where students explore their purpose, learn about a world challenge while solving a real-world local issue through their project, and acquire skills that will be useful during their whole life. MOODs are created by the Learning Planet Institute, a United Nations University hub.

"In the MOOD for Climate Action" will be conducted in cooperation with the University of Bonn and students from all over the world. This innovative Service Learning seminar focuses on climate change and sustainability. Within their learning journey, students will discover themselves and learn about climate change and sustainability in a systemic way. Together with other students they will identify a local problem and develop feasible solutions. In doing so they will get the opportunity to work with/get connected to existing partners, that are active in relevant fields, from within as well as outside the university or will receive the necessary assistance to engage new partnerships.

Upon successful completion of the seminar, students are able to:

demonstrate knowledge of current backgorund developments as well as fundamental disciplinary theories and bodies of knowledge related to climate change and sustainability;
independently develop an action plan to contribute to addressing a contemporary societal challenge;
participate actively and constructively in collaborative, problem-oriented processes;
select and apply appropriate methods for their project and approach from an inter- and transdisciplinary methodological repertoire;
critically reflect on their own disciplinary positioning within the context of contemporary societal challenges;
prepare, communicate, and present the outcomes of their project work in a target-group-oriented and transfer-oriented manner.

Academic requirements:

  • presentation (final presentation, in engl.)
  • project description

Along the credits at the University of Bonn (6CP), participants will earn a United Nations University Hub Certificate.

Teaching methods:

The seminar is organized in three phases/modules:

Discover: Students find out about their purposes and values (5 weeks)
Ideate: Students team up, identify a local problem and start looking for solutions (8 weeks)
