This interdisciplinary service-learning seminar is a collaborative project between the Department of Biology Education at the University of Bonn, the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability, and the Beuel Mitte climate district. Combining scientific work with social engagement, it promotes active exchange between the university and urban society.
The focus is on urban nature, paying particular attention to species that nest in buildings, such as house sparrows, swifts and bats. The long-term goal is to preserve biodiversity in urban areas.
Participants explore the ecological significance of urban biodiversity and the threats it faces. Together with citizens, residents and other interested parties, they develop concepts, strategies and support services tailored to the needs of the local area to protect wildlife. Alongside theoretical discussions, practical approaches are also emphasised, such as recording species populations and implementing specific conservation measures.
Another focus is critically examining the conflicts of interest and synergies between species and climate protection. Collaborating with civil society is yielding practical, everyday solutions for the Beuel Mitte climate district.
Finally, participants reflect on their experiences, document the results, and present them to the public.
General seminar objectives (qualification objectives):
- The ability to collaborate across disciplines with citizens, scientists, and practitioners.
- Developing problem-solving skills in the context of species and climate protection.
- Practical application of scientific findings in a local context.
- Gaining specialist knowledge of urban nature, biodiversity, breeding programmes and climate adaptation.
- Strengthening communication, moderation and participation skills.
- Reflection on one's own self-efficacy in a social context.
- Raising awareness of socio-ecological interactions in urban areas.
Academic achievements:
- The portfolio consists of:

2. Project documentation
This seminar is a service-learning programme offered by the University of Bonn. It is characterised by its practical relevance, the integration of social expertise, and the design of concrete, problem-oriented solutions. This means that both students and cooperation partners can use the results of the project work as starting points and development impulses.
