Aims and target group

The MitSprache module is aimed at students in Bonn who would like to qualify as language tutors on a voluntary basis and as well as newly immigrated people who are interested in studying or job training in Germany.

The aims of the module are:

  • To qualify students as volunteer language tutors by providing them with knowledge and skills on the situation of new immigrants in Germany and support in learning German as a second language in the sense of "Service Learning".
  • To facilitate encounters and exchanges between students and new immigrants who are interested in studying or vocational training.

About the module

MitSprache is a module of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Bonn, which is offered by the Department of Studies and Teaching of the Dean's Office in cooperation with the Caritas Association for the City of Bonn. The module was developed in 2016 for students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.Due to the great demand from students and thanks to the support of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the University's Office for Equal Opportunities and Diversity, the Bonn Caritas Association and other cooperation partners, the course has been open to students from all faculties since the summer semester 2021.

Content and structure of the module

The module consists of a seminar and practical unit. The seminar unit is organised by the students together with the new immigrants. The practical unit is organised by the students. In the seminar unit, students acquire basic language didactic knowledge in the field of "German as a second language" as well as socio-cultural background knowledge on the topics of migration and flight. In cooperation with new immigrants, they work together on the topics of study, training and work and are also sensitised to dealing with stereotypes and prejudices. The subsequent practical unit serves to put the skills acquired in the seminar into practice in the form of voluntary work. This can be done either at the Caritas Association of the City of Bonn or at another charitable organisation or non-profit initiative.

The accompanying meetings serve as an exchange of experiences for former participants of the module. The topic meetings offer students of the module the opportunity to further their education in the areas of German as a second language and refugee and migration.

You will receive more information about the next accompanying and topic meetings by email after participating in the seminar.
