Report on the Workshop
On 19th March 2021, our digital full-day continuing education workshop on service learning digital took place. The workshop was organised in cooperation with the Bonn Centre for Higher Education Teaching (BHZ).
The aim of the workshop was to build up a sound understanding of service learning, to recognise the special nature of cooperation with external non-profit partners, and to integrate and transfer the knowledge gained about service learning into one's own teaching practice.
The workshop was led by Mr. Karsten Altenschmidt, executive member of the Centre for Social Learning and Responsibility (UNIAKTIV) at the University of Duisburg-Essen and Ms. Jingjing He, coordinator for Service Learning at the University of Bonn.
After a short round of introductions of the numerous participants, the basic idea and the areas of application of service learning were presented in the course of the morning, with examples of projects that have already been successfully completed. After the lunch break, the coordination office was presented and what support it offers for the individual target groups. In addition, some Service Learning seminars at the University of Bonn were presented, such as the module "MitSprache - Integration durch Sprachbegleitung für Neuzugewanderte". The participants then developed their own ideas for integrating the service learning concept into their teaching.
